Shippers pay 76 million dollars as demurrage in 2017
Shippers in Ghana paid a colossal 76 million dollars in demurrage charges in 2017 according to the Ghana Shippers’ Authority.
The figure is, however, a reduction from the 95 million dollars paid in 2016
To this end, the Authority has indicated its resolve to embark on greater sensitizations and educational campaigns to ensure shippers operate without incurring such avoidable costs.
Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Ms. Benonita B. Bismarck addressing participants at the recently held seminar for the Ghana Chamber of Mines noted that a study carried out by the Authority showed that about 85 percent of containerized imports go on demurrage and storage rent, a situation she described as unacceptable.
‘’the staggering figures clearly indicate that there is the need for more awareness creation and on the issue’’ she opined.
Ms. Bismarck used the opportunity to call for the harmonization of the HS code, the mining list and the common external tariff (CET) to ensure that mining companies are not short-changed in the payment of duties.
‘’The issue of harmonizing the mining list, the HS Code and the CET is indeed a very critical one which requires a lot of deliberation so as to facilitate doing business in the mining sector which is key to our nation’s development’’ she further noted.
She underscored the importance of the mining sector to the economy of the country, adding that the Ghana Shippers’ Authority was glad to organize such a seminar for the chamber of mines as part of the Authority’s mandate of engaging stakeholders and addressing current issues confronting the shipping industry which affects them in their international trade transactions.
