Let’s be concerned about our comments as politicians – Muntaka advises
The Minority Chief Whip in Parliament, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has sent a word of caution to fellow politicians saying: “we must be concerned about statements we make”.
His caution follows an alleged treasonable comment made by his party’s Deputy General Secretary, Mr. Koku Anyidoho which triggered his arrest by the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service last Tuesday.
Mr. Anyidoho was released by the police on Thursday, March 29, 2018 after a court granted him bail. Police are still investigating him for the comments in the wake of clarification by his legal team that he was never charged with treason as speculated in the media.
They explained that Mr. Anyidoho could be charged with treason if only police find evidence that indicates that truly he is capable of executing what he is purported to have said.
The Asawase lawmaker who was speaking on Kumasi based radio Angel Fm monitored by MyNewsGh.com want his colleagues in politics to be measured by their public utterances.
“We political actors should know that when there is coup d’état, there will be no political space. We all enjoy this political platform because there is a democracy. We have to be very careful” he warned, adding that being in opposition does not guarantee one the license to spew anything into the public domain.
“We do not have another Ghana anywhere, this is the only place we all have. Let’s be careful”, he stressed.
Though he condemned Anyidoho’s comments, he also chided the police administration for failing to handle the situation professionally as expected.
“Such approach creates unnecessary tension in the country they could have handled the situation more professionally”, he said
Background to arrest of Koku Anyidoho
Mr. Anyidoho was arrested in dramatic fashion on Tuesday afternoon when he and other members of the First Ghana Patriotic were holding a press conference to outline plans for a demonstration on Wednesday at the Press Centre.
He had, a day earlier granted an interview to an Accra-based radio station in which he suggested president Nana Akufo-Addo will be overthrown, just like his father
“On January 13, 1972, a certain Col. Ignatius Kutu Acheampong led a movement that removed the Progress Party from power. Busia was the Prime Minister and Akufo-Addo’s father was a ceremonial president. Somebody should tell Nana Akufo-Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself. There’ll be a civil revolt,” Mr Anyidoho said in an interview.
He was however granted bail on Thursday by the police Criminal Investigations Department after his home was ransacked by police investigators and mobile phones and laptops seized. He is yet to report to the police on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 for further investigations according to information gathered by MyNewsGh.com.
